Here´s what I think are the most important things to consider this 2017!

How Traditional is the Traditional Christmas Tree?

A Christmas Trees is a decorated tree, usually an evergreen conifer such as spruce, pine, or fir or an artificial tree of similar appearance, associated with the celebration of Christmas. The modern Christmas tree was developed in early modern Germany (where it is today called Weihnachtsbaum or Christbaum), in which devout Christians brought decorated trees into their homes. It acquired popularity beyond the Lutheran areas of Germany, during the second half of the 19th century, at first among the upper classes. The tree was traditionally decorated with roses made of colored paper, apples, wafers, tinsel, and sweetmeats, with the apples and round ornaments representing the fruit of knowledge of good and evil from the Book of Genesis in the Christian Bible. In the 18th century, it began to be illuminated by candles which were ultimately replaced by Christmas lights after the advent of electrification.

The Mistletoe!

It is a Christmas custom for a couple who meet under a mistletoe to kiss. Mistletoe is commonly used as a Christmas decoration, though such use was rarely alluded to until the 18th century. The tradition has spread throughout the English-speaking world but is largely unknown in the rest of Europe. It was described in 1820 by American author Washington Irving in his The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent.: The Mistletoe is still hung up in farm-houses and kitchens at Christmas, and the young men have the privilege of kissing the girls under it, plucking each time a berry from the bush. When the berries are all plucked the privilege ceases.

Some claim that the origin of the tradition of kissing under the mistletoe goes back to ancient Norse mythology. According to the myth, a goddess named Frigg had a son named Baldr. When he was born, she made all plants unable to hurt him. Yet she overlooked the mistletoe plant, and a god known for his mischief, Loki, tricked another god into killing Baldr with a spear made of mistletoe. The gods eventually brought Baldr back to life, and Frigg declared that mistletoe would bring love rather than death into the world. People then kissed under the mistletoe to obey the goddess, as well as to remember Baldr’s resurrection.

Another theory is that the tradition originated in the ancient Babylonian-Assyrian Empire. Single women apparently stood under mistletoe hung outside the temple for the goddess of beauty and love. They were expected to bond with the first man that approached them – but they did not kiss. Historically, mistletoe was seen as a supernatural, healing plant. It was believed to promote fertility, and its leaves were said to be an aphrodisiac. Mistletoe was once a part of marriage ceremonies for this reason, and was placed under couples’ beds for good luck. The tradition later was found in England, when young men would kiss women standing under the mistletoe, and would pluck a berry from the bush after each kiss. After all the berries were gone, it was bad luck to continue kissing under that bush. It is important to remember that during this period a kiss was taken very seriously – it was usually seen as a promise of marriage!

The Stockings

The stockings are the most humble of the gift-related items of Christmas and a very important indicator of how “Well” some children behaved. Stockings scream cozy loving Christmas to anyone who sees them. So here are a few choices.

A Christmas stocking is an empty sock or sock-shaped bag that is hung on Christmas Eve so that Santa Claus (or Father Christmas) can fill it with small toys, candy, fruit, coins or other small gifts when he arrives. These small items are often referred to as Stocking Stuffers or Stocking Fillers. In some Christmas stories, the contents of the Christmas stocking are the only toys the child receives at Christmas from Santa Claus; in other stories (and in tradition), some presents are also wrapped up in wrapping paper and placed under the Christmas tree. Tradition in Western culture threatens that a child who behaves badly during the year will receive only a piece or pile of coal. However, coal is rarely if ever left in a stocking, as it is considered cruel. Some people even put their Christmas stocking by their bedposts so Santa Claus can fill it by the bed while they sleep.

Cheaper by the Dozen

At a little over a dollar per stocking, this gorgeous Christmas stocking set, is my first choice.

Modern-Classic Christmas Stockings?

While the term “nativity scene” may be used of any representation of the very common subject of the Nativity of Jesus in art, it has a more specialized sense referring to seasonal displays, either using model figures in a setting or reenactments called “living nativity scenes” (tableau vivant) in which real humans and animals participate. Nativity scenes exhibit figures representing the infant Jesus, his mother, Mary, and her husband, Joseph.

Other characters from the nativity story, such as shepherds, sheep, and angels may be displayed near the manger in a barn (or cave) intended to accommodate farm animals, as described in the Gospel of Luke. A donkey and an ox are typically depicted in the scene, and the Magi and their camels, described in the Gospel of Matthew, are also included. Several cultures add other characters and objects that may or may not be Biblical are included based on local traditions.

The Christmas Lights

Christmas Lights (also known as fairy lights) are lights used for decoration in celebration of Christmas, often on display throughout the Christmas season including Advent and Christmastide. The custom goes back to when Christmas trees were decorated with candles, which symbolized Christ being the light of the world; these were brought by Christians into their homes in early modern Germany.

Christmas trees displayed publicly and illuminated with electric lights became popular in the early 20th century. By the mid-20th century, it became customary to display strings of electric lights as along streets and on buildings; Christmas decorations detached from the Christmas tree itself. In the United States, it became popular to outline private homes with such Christmas lights in tract housing beginning in the 1960s. By the late 20th century, the custom had also been adopted in other nations, including outside the Western world, notably in Japan and Hong Kong. Throughout Christendom, Christmas lights continue to retain their symbolism of Jesus as the light of the world.

In many countries, Christmas Lights, as well as other Christmas decorations, are traditionally erected on or around the first day of Advent. In the Western Christian world, the two traditional days when Christmas lights are removed are Twelfth Night and Candlemas, the latter of which ends the Christmas-Epiphany season in some denominations. Leaving the decorations up beyond Candlemas is historically considered to be inauspicious.

Was Jim’s Enlightenment Just Media Bait for New Netflix Over-The-Top Documentary?

So, was it all fake? Did Jim Carrey go on an attention seeking mediatic rampage to set the stage for new Netflix documentary about his over-the-top involvement in the making of the film about an over-the-top comedian? Try saying that 10 times fast.  “Man on the Moon” remember? This is the movie where Jim stars in the biopic about the 70’s comedic icon Andy Kaufman. The guy was so eerie you just could not stop staring, and in the 90’s, Jim played the part to the point of international praise.  Was Jim really getting all “high on the existential nihilism of modern quantum physics” or is this mediatic genius setting the stage for his brand new Netflix biopic about his great role in the Kaufman biopic? Just look at some of Jim’s more WTF moments:

So, well, Netflix is Hollywoodizing the making of the man on the moon, so this is what Netflix says about Jim:

Now, thanks to Jim’s re-entry into the attention of mass media, it’s really tempting to look at the original footage, and if you do, then I’m sure you be driven to watch the original Andy Kaufman recordings as well, although I’d recommend you skip down to the last video first ( Pure 100% Kaufman Mind Farts).

So here is some real Bizarro a;’la Kaufman:

How Art Can Change Society? By Sarah Lewis

Sarah Lewis is a curator and historian based in New York. She describes how art ( Photography and Music) and I dare add Film, change society. And it is that way.

One of the great challenges today is that we often feel untouched by the problems of others and by global issues like climate change, even when we could easily do something to help. We do not feel strongly enough that we are part of a global community, part of a larger web. Giving people access to data most often leaves them feeling overwhelmed and disconnected, not empowered and poised for action. This is where art can make a difference. Art does not show people what to do, yet engaging with a good work of art can connect you to your senses, body, and mind. It can make the world felt. And this felt feeling may spur thinking, engagement, and even action.

As an artist, I have traveled to many countries around the world over the past 20 years. On one day I may stand in front of an audience of global leaders or exchange thoughts with a foreign minister and discuss the construction of an artwork or exhibition with local craftsmen the next. Working as an artist has brought me into contact with a wealth of outlooks on the world and introduced me to a vast range of truly differing perceptions, felt ideas, and knowledge. Being able to take part in these local and global exchanges has profoundly affected the artworks that I make, driving me to create art that I hope touches people everywhere.

Art also encourages us to cherish intuition, uncertainty, and creativity and to search constantly for new ideas; artists aim to break rules and find unorthodox ways of approaching contemporary issues. My friend Ai Weiwei, for example, the great Chinese artist, is currently making a temporary studio on the island of Lesbos to draw attention to the plight of the millions of migrants trying to enter Europe right now and also to create a point of contact that takes us beyond an us-and-them mentality to a broader idea of what constitutes we. This is one way that art can engage with the world to change the world.”

Trends modern urban design: Peter Calthorpe

1 of every 2 humans live in cities and this will soon be 2 of every 3. The city defines the quality of life of its inhabitants more than any other factor at a mass scale, and on the individual. The impact of a city is huge. From climate change to economic vitality to our very well-being and sense of connectedness. How a city is designed matters. Peter Calthorpe is already at work planning the cities of the future and advocating for community design that’s focused on human interaction. He shares seven universal principles for solving sprawl and building smarter, more sustainable cities.

Where are The Most Fascinating Old ABANDONED Mansions?

Old abandoned mansions around the world! Once thriving castles, these old places are now abandoned! Located in Ukraine, Russia, Belgium and New York in case you are interested to visit them.

Muromtzevo Castle, Russia

The legend of this castle begins in the 1800s when a French and a Russian nobleman started arguing over whose country had the best architecture. After hearing the French nobleman go on and on, the Russian declared that he could easily Build a castle as magnificent as the ones in France. The French man said that if he built this castle he would go to Russia himself to see it and the bet was on. Colonel Vladimir Khrapovitsky went home and built Muromtzevo Castle.
5 years later he invited his French noble friends to his estate to visit his gothic castle. When they arrived they began complimenting him on his new home. “Oh no”, he said. “This is just the stable! The castle is a bit further!” The guests were amazed at the French style chateau complete with gardens and cascades. Khrapovitsky also built two schools and a church for the villagers.
When the Russian Revolution started, Khrapovitsky was forced to flee his castle and is said to have deceased in poverty. His beautiful creation was plundered and rebuilt in a way the owners would have hardly recognized. It was used as a college, and then a hospital, and then forgotten.

Pidhirtsi Castle, Ukraine
Built between 1635 and 1640, Pidhirtsi Castle has survived the trials of war and occupation. Part castle, part fortress, this castle has the reputation for being haunted. In the 18th century, one of the owners was said to have ambushed his wife because of his insane jealousy and had her body walled up in the basement. Known as the “Woman in White” she is said to wander the castle. A group of 20 Ukrainian psychics recently agreed that the place was filled with ghosts. Measurements of the electromagnetic field of the castle were off the charts, a pseudo-scientific sign for many that Pidhirtsi is most certainly haunted.
During WWII the castle was taken over and plundered by the Soviets until it was converted into a hospital for people suffering from sickness. A lightning bolt struck the building in 1956, Setting it on fire for three weeks straight, destroying everything left inside. It has now been converted into a museum, telling the story of the struggles of a region.

Miranda Castle, Belgium
Also called Chateau de Noisy, this castle in Belgium was Built for French aristocrats fleeing the French Revolution. In 1866, Count Liedekerke-De Beaufort commissioned English architect Edward Milner to design and build them a new home. Even though Milner passed away,
the castle was Completed in 1907 once the clock tower was erected. The Liedekerke-Beaufort family lived in the castle until World War II, when it was occupied by the Germans after the Battle of the Bulge which took place on part of the property.
In 1950, the National Railway Company of Belgium took over the castle and turned it into an orphanage and camp for sick children. This is when it was renamed Chateau de Noisy. It was too expensive to maintain and in 1991, the castle was abandoned. Parts of the structure were heavily damaged in a fire and most of the ceilings have collapsed.
In 2014, the family applied for and was granted permission to demolish Miranda Castle. In 2015, A group of investors intervened to stop the demolition and petitioned to have it included on the Walloon Heritage Conservation List. As of June 2016, the castle is in private hands and is listed as private property. Rumor has it that the family finally agreed to sell, but no one knows who has bought it.
Miranda Castle was used as a filming location for the American series Hannibal. In the show, this Belgian castle is portrayed as Castle Lecter in Lithuania as the ancestral home of everyone’s favorite cannibal.

Halcyon Hall, New York
The image of Halcyon Hall is Used by many paranormal investigators to represent haunted places but most people don’t know what or where it is. This rotting relic in Millbrook, New York was originally built as a luxury hotel in 1890 when summer colonies like Newport were popular. H. J. Davison Jr. spent a fortune on the Victorian Queen Anne style building with 5 stories and 200 rooms.
Unfortunately, the resort failed and Davison was forced to sell. It was then purchased in 1907 by May Bennett for her Bennett School for Girls which later became Bennett College. The school had been founded in 1890 in Irvington, NY but needed a larger home.
The Bennett School offered 6 years of education to girls from prominent families in NY.

Is Ben Affleck Directing the New Batman Movie?

Ben Affleck Puts Batman Directing Doubts to Rest!

It seemed like a sure thing that Ben Affleck was scheduled to write, direct and star in a new solo Batman movie, but a recent interview with The Guardian in which he stated: “It’s not a set thing and there’s no script” have put the status of the project into question. Further rumors of filming being pushed back from a spring date to sometime in the summer have Bat-fans worried their winged crusader will not take flight, but a new TV interview with Jimmy Kimmel Live! has set the record straight.

“I’m gonna direct the next Batman, we’re working on it,” Affleck confirmed. “It’s one of those things that’s really frustrating because with ‘Live By Night’ it took me a year-and-a-half to write it and get it ready and I worked really hard. It’s just no one gave a s**t. No one was like, ‘WHERE’S ‘LIVE BY NIGHT?’ But with Batman I keep getting the, “WHERE’S THE F**KING BATMAN?” I’m like, “Whoa, I’m working! Give me a second!”

While it’s possible that the script work Affleck is doing with DC Comics CCO Geoff Johns is still being fine-tuned, that is without question a good thing. One of the primary aspects that have hurt DC Films in the past has been the rushed slate to meet release dates, with Suicide Squad in particular only given a scant six weeks for script development. As of now, Warner Bros. has Aquaman and The Flash set for release in 2018, although with no director attached don’t be surprised if the latter film falls off the schedule. While it may behoove Warner Bros. shareholders to rush a Batman solo movie in to fill that Flash gap, it would be unwise, as another critical disappointment — particularly with an Oscar-winning director like Affleck behind it — could spell the beginning of the end for DC’s cinematic universe. Expect The Batman to maintain its projected 2019 release date.

Joe Manganiello will face off against Ben Affleck’s Batman in the film as Deathstroke, after first making his debut in the upcoming Justice League , with additional appearances by Jeremy Irons as Alfred and J.K. Simmons as Commissioner Gordon expected to happen as well. DC Entertainment President and CCO Geoff Johns will serve as co-writer (with Affleck) and producer.

Affleck will return to the big screen as Batman first in Justice League , opening in theaters on November 17.

Mermaid Sightings Since 1400!

Real mermaid sightings reported around the world, since long ago times. Real mermaid bodies that will certainly intrigue you.

“British Columbia, 1967
In 1967, British Columbia became a hub of mermaid excitement when, one day, Ferry riders spotted a mermaid lounging on the shore of Mayne Island. They claimed they saw a topless, blonde woman with the tail of a porpoise sitting on the beach shore. Some witnesses even became very upset, as they believed they saw the mermaid eating a raw salmon. One tourist from Iowa even managed to take a picture.
After the sighting, the mermaid was seen one more time the following week. As the locals got swept up by the spotting of this mysterious mermaid, the town locals began to seek any information relating to her. The town newspaper, The Colonist, put up a $25,000 reward for the mermaid. Arrangements were even made for the mermaid to have room and board once she was found and successfully acclimated into the town setting. Although many believe that the whole thing was a charade, many still believe that what they saw was real.

Scotland, 1830
Mermaids are a part of Scotland’s countless mysteries and legends. It’s not surprising, then, that there would be many accounts of mermaid sightings.
In 1830, the people of the island of Benbecula saw a mermaid. While cutting seaweed near the shore one day, a woman reportedly saw a miniature woman swimming in the water. Surprised by her discovery, she called many people over to view the water dweller. Some men rushed at her in the water, either to catch her or get a closer look, and the woman swam out of reach. Some boys threw stones at the frightened mermaid and one struck her in the back. A few days later, the corpse of the mermaid supposedly washed up on the shore.
Like many of the other claims of mermaids, this one was small, with pale white skin and had the tail of a fish without scales. After the discovery, the sheriff of the town thought it only fitting that the mermaid have a proper burial. Someone constructed a coffin and the mermaid, wrapped in a shroud, was laid to rest above the shoreline where she was found. To this day, no one knows exactly where the mermaid was buried as no marker was left to denote the spot.

West Indies, 1614
John Smith, the same John Smith from Pocahontas, reported that he saw a mermaid off the coast of West Indies in 1614. According to the story, Smith saw a woman swimming parallel to the shore. He was captivated by the grace in which she moved and noted that she had ears that were too long, a nose that was too short, eyes that were too round, and green hair. He also noted that the woman was a little attractive from the waist up. From the waist down, however, she was all fish.
Some doubt has been thrown on the veracity of the tale, of course, otherwise where would the mystery be. One source claims he wasn’t in the West Indies but in Newfoundland. Another historian says Smith wasn’t in the West Indies in 1614, though he was there in 1607. Potato patato in this case. The same historian suggested that Alexandre Dumas fabricated the tale to give credence to his own mermaid story about a Frenchman searching for a Dutchman who had four children with a mermaid.

Norway, 1608
In 1608, Henry Hudson explored the cold northern waters off Norway. Written in his journal, he describes a day when he encountered a group of mermaids. Hudson claimed a mermaid appeared in the water, saw his crew and called up more of her mermaid sisters. He described the women as being as big as the men in his crew, with very white skin and long dark hair. He claimed their tails looked like a dolphin’s but were spotted like a mackerel. Hudson was thrilled that he had discovered mermaids.
What makes this case so strange is that it occurred in the Bering Sea. Most mermaid sightings are discounted as sailors mistaking animals, often manatees, as mermaids. However, no manatees swim the waters of the Bering Sea. Naturalist Philip Henry Gosse, in his mid-1800s work The Romance of Natural History, believes it to be impossible that Hudson mistook an animal for this mermaid. He believes seasoned sailors such as Hudson would be able to identify animals in that location easily. Gosse believes either Hudson made this entire story up or Hudson saw something truly unique to the realm of science. We may never know.”

“Wonder Woman-Symbol of Girl Power or Sex Symbol?”

A big debate has overcome after Wonder Woman´s movie, and the big dilemma is “Wonder Woman-Symbol of Girl Power or Sex Symbol?” What do you think? Read on and know what is going on!

Wonder Woman a character created for girls to show them a strong role model. The United Nations had named Wonder Woman as Honorary Ambassador for the Empowerment of Women and Girls, they have announced that they will no longer use her to create conscious of gender equality.  United Nations asked the public before announcing the decision. this is what people replied:

“Although the original creators may have intended Wonder Woman to represent a strong and independent warrior woman with a feminist message, the reality is that the character’s current iteration is that of a large breasted, white woman of impossible proportions, scantily clad in a shimmery, thigh-baring body suit with an American flag motif and knee high boots –the epitome of a pin-up girl.”

Lynda Carter the first actress to personify Wonder Woman defends her character saying Wonder Woman has more qualities than just a sexual object. She also pointed out that neither her, not Gal Gadot and Wonder Woman,  fall into the stereotype of “White Woman” category. For instance, Lynda Carter is half Mexican, Gal Gadot Israeli and Wonder Woman is an Amazonian, not American. So none of the things said about the character are real things.

Gal Gadot
Lynda Carter, the first woman to personify the character.

About her costume design, she is one of the comics that were meant to be American Heroes. Her dress encloses her in a box because she can no longer be seen more than an object. Her bikini is seen like a sexual liberation. The comparison is that if ladies have used this type of clothes would have been taken to jail if they were seen at the beach. On our times, we have people saying her dress is not the correct and she should put some clothes on, the interesting thing is that these opinions come from women!!

Now comes the question, is our character a sex symbol? Well, she is a brilliant, strengthful, an athlete, and no one can hide she is very attractive!! But being attractive does not subtract her points out of all her other qualities. The debate keeps on and it all goes to criticize Wonder Woman´s dressing like if it is all that matters. They are surely categorizing her wrong. Source:

The debate will probably not end but, you decide what Wonder Woman a magnificent comic with incredible powers really is. A Symbol of Girl Power or Sex Symbol?…………..

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is a 2017 American superhero film based on the Marvel Comics superhero team Guardians of the Galaxy, produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. It is the sequel to 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy and the fifteenth film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The film is written and directed by James Gunn and stars an ensemble cast featuring Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Michael Rooker, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Elizabeth Debicki, Chris Sullivan, Sean Gunn, Sylvester Stallone, and Kurt Russell. In Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, the Guardians travel throughout the cosmos as they help Peter Quill learn more about his true parentage.

The film was officially announced at the 2014 San Diego Comic-Con International before the theatrical release of the first film, along with Gunn’s return from the first film, with the title of the sequel revealed a year later in June 2015. The film began principal photography in February 2016 at Pinewood Atlanta Studios in Fayette County, Georgia, with many crew changes from the first film due to other commitments. Filming concluded in June 2016. Gunn chose to set the sequel shortly after the first film to explore the characters’ new roles as the Guardians, and to follow the storyline of Quill’s father established throughout the first film—Russell was confirmed in that role in July 2016, portraying Ego, a departure from Quill’s comic father.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 premiered in Tokyo on April 10, 2017 and was released in the United States on May 5, 2017, in 3D and IMAX 3D. It has grossed $509 million worldwide, making it the fifth highest-grossing film of 2017. The film was praised by critics for its humor, soundtrack and cast, but was deemed not as “fresh” as the original. A sequel, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, is being developed with James Gunn returning to write and direct.- Source:

Top 5 Awesome Facts about Doctor Who

“Doctor Who is a British science-fiction television programme produced by the BBC since 1963. The programme depicts the adventures of a Time Lord called “the Doctor”, an extraterrestrial being from the planet Gallifrey. The Doctor explores the universe in a time-travelling space ship called the TARDIS. Its exterior appears as a blue British police box, which was a common sight in Britain in 1963 when the series first aired. Accompanied by a number of companions, the Doctor combats a variety of foes, while working to save civilisations and help people in need.

The show is a significant part of British popular culture, and elsewhere it has gained a cult following. It has influenced generations of British television professionals, many of whom grew up watching the series. The programme originally ran from 1963 to 1989. There was an unsuccessful attempt to revive regular production in 1996 with a backdoor pilot, in the form of a television film titled Doctor Who. The programme was relaunched in 2005, and since then has been produced in-house by BBC Wales in Cardiff. Doctor Who has also spawned numerous spin-offs, including comic books, films, novels, audio dramas, and the television series Torchwood (2006–2011), The Sarah Jane Adventures (2007–2011), K-9 (2009–2010), and Class (2016), and has been the subject of many parodies and references in popular culture.

Twelve actors have headlined the series as the Doctor. The transition from one actor to another is written into the plot of the show with the concept of regeneration into a new incarnation – an idea introduced in 1966 to allow the show to continue after the departure of original lead William Hartnell who was becoming very ill at the time. The concept is that this is a Time Lord trait through which the character of the Doctor takes on a new body and personality to recover from a severe injury or anything that would otherwise kill a normal person. Each actor’s portrayal differs, but all represent stages in the life of the same character and form a single narrative. The time-travelling feature of the plot means that different incarnations of the Doctor occasionally meet. The current lead, Peter Capaldi, confirmed he would be leaving the show after the tenth series, with his final appearance being the 2017 Christmas special, “Twice Upon a Time”. In July, Jodie Whittaker was announced as the Thirteenth Doctor, the first woman to be cast in the role.” -

Urban planning legend Jane Jacobs is the subject of a new documentary

Jane Jacobs OC OOnt (born Jane Butzner; May 4, 1916 – April 25, 2006) was an American-Canadian journalist, author, and activist best known for her influence on urban studies, sociology, and economics. Her influential book The Death and Life of Great American Cities (1961) argued that urban renewal did not respect the needs of most city-dwellers. In the book she introduced sociological concepts such as “eyes on the street” and “social capital”.

Jacobs was well known for organizing grassroots efforts to protect existing neighborhoods from “slum clearance” – and particularly for her opposition to Robert Moses in his plans to overhaul her neighborhood, Greenwich Village.

She was instrumental in the eventual cancellation of the Lower Manhattan Expressway, which would have passed directly through SoHo and Little Italy. She was arrested in 1968 for inciting a crowd at a public hearing on that project. After moving to Toronto in 1968, she joined the opposition to the Spadina Expressway and the associated network of expressways in Toronto planned, and under construction.

As a mother and a writer who criticized experts in the male-dominated field of urban planning, Jacobs endured scorn from established figures. She did not have a college degree or any formal training in urban planning, and her lack of such credentials was seized upon as grounds for criticism by some. Learn more here:

40 Guardians of the Galaxy Trivia Facts

  • Star Lord’s obscene gesture from the trailer was apparently improvised by Chris Pratt on set.
  • The film’s soundtrack, Awesome Mix Vol. 1, was the first film soundtrack to make it to number one on the Billboard chart without a single original song.
  • Knowhere, the starport visited by Peter Quill (Star Lord) and his crew was the severed head of an ancient being known as a Celestial. How his head ended up as a port of a call at the end of the universe is a mystery.
  • In the 1969 comic where they were introduced, the original Guardians were Vance Astro from Earth, Martinex from Pluto, Charlie-27 from Jupiter, and Yondu from Centauri IV. Yondu appears in the film, played by Michael Rooker, though in a more adversarial role.
  • In order to capture the big screen version of Rocket, director James Gunn brought a real raccoon, named Oreo, to the set. He was so helpful, that Gunn wound up bringing Oreo to the Guardians of the Galaxy red carpet premiere in Los Angeles. No word on which designer Oreo decided to wear.
  • Jason Momoa, best known for playing Drogo in Game of Thrones, was set to star as Drax but dropped out, reportedly because he didn’t want to be typecast as a giant warrior man. Instead, he will be starring in DC’s Aquaman franchise where he will be playing a giant warrior man.
  • The three circular lights that you see on the Nova Corps armor are meant to represent the three suns of Xandar, their home planet.
  • According to some websites, Guardians of the Galaxy has the highest body count in movie history at 83,871. Apparently the Death Star and Alderaan don’t count towards Star Wars’ total.
  • Peter Quill’s badass spaceship is named the Milano, named after 80s crush-bait Alyssa Milano.
  • Dave Bautista had to stand for five hours while they applied full body makeup and then for another hour and a half while they removed it. According to Chris Pratt, he never once complained.
  • Ronan the Accuser’s gigantic spaceship, The Dark Aster, is as big as the 1,454 foot Empire State Building turned over 11 times. That’s 15,994 feet for people who can’t do the math in their head.
  • Vin Diesel recorded the line “I Am Groot” over a thousand times and even did the recordings on stilts because that’s what you do when you’re a method actor playing a tree.
  • In a film about a sentient tree and his talking raccoon pal, fans were up in arms about an “unrealistic” scene in which Gamora floats in the vacuum of space after her ship was destroyed only to be saved when Peter Quill rescues her by also flying through space and giving her his breathing mask. NASA waded into the depths of the Internet to confirm that it was theoretically possible. More disturbingly, they cited evidence from experiments performed in the 1960s involving chimpanzees. Someone call PETA.
  • Director James Gunn recorded his own dance moves for his animators to use as a model for the immensely popular Baby Groot proving that white people can dance, as long as they’re pretending to be a tiny tree.
  • When first casting the voice of Rocket Raccoon, Marvel initially considered Adam Sandler or Jim Carrey. Both would have lent comic energy to the role, but at the end of the day, Bradley Cooper won the role. Because when you need someone to play a sociopathic raccoon, it’s a bonus if they’re super good looking.
  • Amongst the many well-known actors (Joseph Gordon Levitt, Eddie Redmayne, John Krasinski) who auditioned for the role of Peter Quill, the one who came the closest to taking it from Chris Pratt was Glenn Howerton, most famous for his role as Dennis on It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. While most people agree that Pratt was near perfect, it would have been fascinating to watch Howerton turn a 5-star man into a Star Lord.
  • Rocket Raccoon’s accent in the comics was originally meant to be Cockney. And while nobody knew exactly what Bradley Cooper was going to do, his accent was most definitively not Cockney. Cooper cited Tommy DeVito (Joe Pesci’s character in Goodfellas) as an influence on the final product.
  • Because Bradley Cooper wasn’t able to be on set for most of the shoot, the physical part of Rocket Raccoon was played by the director James Gunn’s brother Sean (best known as Kirk from Gilmore Girls). This led to several lines being improvised that weren’t in the original script as well as a fulfillment of James Gunn’s lifelong dream of ordering his little brother to act like a raccoon.
Chris Pratt claims that major influences on his performance as Star Lord were Han Solo and Marty McFly.
  • Three of the creatures that could be seen stuck in cages on the Collector’s base are a Dark Elf from “Thor: The Dark World”, a Chitauri from “The Avengers”, and a slug creature from “Slither”, a movie previously directed by James Gunn.
  • Yondu, played by Michael Rooker, was actually one of the original Guardians of the Galaxy that first appeared in the 1969 comic books. In the comics, he is an archer.
  • In the film, he took down his enemies with a sentient arrow.
In the film, there is a dog in a CCCP space suit in the Collector’s exhibition case. This dog is Cosmo, and in the comics, he was a Russian dog with psychic powers and was one of the main members of the Guardians of the Galaxy. He did not get along with Rocket, which is alluded to in the film.
  • Chris Pratt and Dave Bautista rehearsed their originally scripted fight scene for two and a half months. The Friday before they were scheduled to film it, James Gunn tossed it out and decided he wanted the entire fight filmed in one long shot. Pratt and Bautista only had a few hours to learn the choreography for the fight that ended up in the final cut. It took twenty-two takes.
  • Chris Pratt stole his Star Lord costume from the set for the sole purpose of wearing it to hospitals to visit sick children who might want to meet Star Lord.
  • The post-credit scene features Howard the Duck, the titular character from a series of existentialist comic books. The film adaptation which, according to many fans, missed the point of the comics, was widely panned by critics.
  • Howard the Duck may return for the Guardians of the Galaxy sequel.
  • Within thirty seconds of Chris Pratt’s audition, director James Gunn was willing to offer Pratt the role and joked that he would put a CGI six pack on Pratt if he failed to get in shape on time.
  • The opening scene was originally supposed to be set to the song “Hooked on a Feeling” but James Gunn changed it to “Come and Get Your Love” because he felt it worked better.
  • Although uncredited, Josh Brolin, who played Thanos, was the last person cast in the film. He based his portrayal of Thanos on Marlon Brando’s role of Colonel Walter E. Kurtz in Apocalypse Now.
  • Peter Quill uses a cassette player called the Sony TPS-L2. It was the first cassette player released in 1979 and called the Walkman. The popularity of the film has renewed interest in classic Walkmans to the chagrin of hipsters everywhere.
  • When measuring Djimon Honsou for his outfit, costume designer Alexandra Byrne remarked that he was so perfectly built, she could put a beanbag on him and he’d make it look good.
  • The Guardians of the Galaxy screenplay was written by Nicole Perlman, the first woman to ever be credited with writing a Marvel-produced screenplay.
The blue alien that Groot picks up by the nostrils in the Kyln was played by Nathan Fillion, space cowboy.
  • Karen Gillan shaved her head for the role of Nebula and then made a wig out of her hair.
  • Guardians of the Galaxy was the first non-Avengers Marvel film to be developed by Walt Disney pictures and fans claim there are several images of Mickey Mouse hidden throughout the film.
  • It was the first Marvel Cinematic Universe film to cross $300 million in domestic box office that did not feature Iron Man (who was meant to make a cameo in the first film, but didn’t because of contract issues with Robert Downey Jr).
  • Near the end of the film, Star Lord refers to Ronan the Accuser as “turd blossom” which is also the nickname George W. Bush used for Karl Rove, who also may be a supervillain hellbent on destroying the world.
  • Vin Diesel says that becoming Groot helped him through a very difficult time; he was grieving for Paul Walker, his best friend and co-star in the Fast and the Furious franchise, who died in a tragic car accident. “It was the first time I came back to dealing with human beings after dealing with death, so playing a character who celebrates life in the way Groot does, was very nice.
